Overview At the end of my freshman year, I founded the startup nonprofit, Elixir, with a team of other students. Elixir’s mission is to connect undocumented uninsured individuals with community health resources, through monthly workshops and a mobile app. In my role as Founder and CEO, I was in charge of articulating a vision, building the team, finding advisors, and gaining seed funding. Some of the highlights of this experience was pitching the idea at SVP Seattle Fastpitch and launching our first workshops. The experience was integral to my self-development because it taught me how to analyze real-world problems, generate ideas, and then motivate myself to create change and work towards social responsibility. Personal Importance of Work
My work with Elixir is extremely important to me. This was the first experience of my life in which I put an idea into action, without any defined structure to follow. I learned the value of research, team motivation, and networking. Ultimately though, the most rewarding part of this experience were the actual workshops we conducted – meeting immigrants, hearing their stories, and then doing our part to provide healthcare resources. Before this experience, I knew I was interested in science and I had a growing interest in healthcare. After my work with Elixir, I knew that I wanted to combine my research skills and scientific knowledge, with my passion for service and social responsibility in the field of medicine. |
